what to do if i dont know my dreams

Sculpture of kids on a bench on their phones

Finish me if you lot've heard this one:

"If your dreams don't scare you, they aren't big enough."

It's sort of assumed that we all take dreams. Big Dreams. Lofty Dreams. Incommunicable Dreams.

Merely we're supposed to dream them anyway. Shed those conventions! Trounce on those naysayers! Later on all, the future belongs to those of us who believe in the dazzler of our dreams, right?

Actually…hang on, Mrs. Roosevelt.

What if I don't accept a dream?

What about those of us who don't have a Big Dream? What are nosotros supposed to exercise, brand one up in a drastic bid to grab our piece of the future?

We hear it all the fourth dimension:

  • Dream job
  • Dream wedding
  • Dream vacation
  • Dream house
  • Dream car

What if we don't *have* a dream about these things? What if your dream is but to be happy and keep that going for as long as possible?

Is that…big enough?

Because, seriously, I don't have a dream nuptials. I have a couple of Pinterest boards, but bluntly am more interested in finding dessert recipes that I can brand at home on a Tuesday than quirky, emotionally poignant centerpieces that will be relevant for approximately five hours.

I don't have a dream job

The same goes for a career. I thought that by now, I'd know what I want to do.

I don't.

I also uncovered a major surreptitious that society has been trying to keep under wraps for years, and that is that we don't accept to know what we want to do. Ever.

I'chiliad not so sure that a dream job has to be life-changing, or fulfilling, or fantastic. Information technology should facilitate the overall life you want and allow for that to happen.

For case.

Which one sounds like a dream job?

Scenario #1: Passion as a business

Establish your own business selling flip books on Etsy. You savor it, but the hours are long and it'due south hard to turn off your encephalon even when you lot're not technically working.

Truth exist told, you are ever. working.

It's making you sort of despise those flip books and yous have to remind yourself not to draw devil horns on some clients' heads (merely doing it in your listen is totally okay).

Scenario #ii: Passion as a side hustle

Flexible office job that you lot don't love but y'all don't hate, either. Your co-workers are dainty, the holiday is practiced, and the pay is enough to allow you practice what y'all want during your time off.

When yous leave the role, you don't think about it. At all. In your costless fourth dimension, you travel, hang out with friends and family, and enjoy drawing flip books.

It feels blasphemous to say, but Scenario #two could actually be your dream job. Less stress, flexibility, freedom, security – doesn't sound also bad.

Of grade, there are endless possible scenarios—you may work round-the-clock at your own creative endeavor and honey it, which would be ideal. (Some may even phone call it living the dream.) You may have a flexible, depression-stress office chore that absolutely feeds on your soul, and I'm not trying to suggest that information technology could be your dream task. (Get out. Exit yesterday.)

I'one thousand just saying that your dream might already exist in progress.

Maybe you're living your dream

I used to recall that my dream was to become a author. Once I identified this as my dream, I allow information technology dangle in front of me, referencing it in the abstract and keeping it tucked safely in the future. I hoped, I wrote, I waited, I hoped some more.

And you know what happened? Becoming a writer kept on existence my dream. Fifty-fifty equally I was being a writer, I kept imagining what information technology would exist like to be ane. Suddenly having a dream felt limiting but the thought of adding a dream to run into all of my interests was exhausting.

The reason I didn't accept that I was, in essence, living my dream, is because it didn't change my life.

What does it hateful to have a dream?

That'due south another affair about dreams – they're supposed to change your life, so it's really obvious when you've achieved them.

After 10 years of travel, when I wasn't and so sure my dream was really my Dream anymore, I realized that dreams are totally useless until y'all turn them into goals.

Then now, I don't have a Dream. I have lots of goals, and plenty of ideas, and I work towards them on a daily basis. Yous could say that my goals are my dreams; it's a matter of semantics, really. My main objective (goal? dream?) is to exist happy. Live a life I feel skillful nigh.

I can attain this goal in a million different ways, and I'thou not sure how I'1000 going to keep doing information technology. It won't exist by ane big action, merely lots of little ones. It'll be trial and error. It'll be hard. Information technology'll be satisfying.

It doesn't scare me at all.

I'm totally okay with that.
